As I pitted the delicious cherries I had just brought home from the grocery store, I found my joy in cooking again. Little by little over the last few weeks I have become myself again. For some reason, my last pregnancy was tough on me. Even the stats are impressive: 10 pound baby at 42 weeks! I must admit my patience paid off- I did get my beautiful natural birth and a healthy baby boy. We named him Asa. I have a gang of 3 boys to feed now and it is a blessing to feel like myself again. I appreciate all of you who subscribed to my RSS feed and waited patiently for me to return from maternity leave.
Bloggers get maternity leave, right?
CHERRY PIE FILLING
4 cups cherries, pitted
a squeeze of fresh lemon (optional)
1/2 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons cornstarch (or thickener of choice)
Directions:
Bring cherries, lemon juice and sugar to boil. Mix cornstarch and small amt of water. Pour into the cherry mixture. Stir until thickened. If you need to thicken even further, just add more cornstarch.
TOPPING
1 cup gluten free oats
1/4 cup butter
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup almonds, sliced
Directions:
In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients until thoroughly combined.
CHERRY CRISP
Directions:
Pour slightly cooled cherry pie filling into glass pie dish and arrange the topping over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until bubbly.
I served my naturally gluten free (no flour) Cherry Crisp with gluten free Stonyfield Farms Plain lowfat yogurt. Any gluten free ice cream would work great too.
In case you prefer gluten free apple crisp.
And a picture of the baby (six weeks old) who gave me so much trouble!

Congratulations! I am SO glad you are back! I also had a boy at 42 weeks ten years ago and he weighed 10 lbs 15.3 oz!!!!!
Oh and I forgot to say….BLESS you for having him naturally! I tried but after 36 hours and some pushing he just wouldn’t come out! TOO BIG!
Smiling already at 6 weeks! Amazing!
I’m very excited about the cherry crisp, specially since I just bought a cherry pitter at a second hand shop.
Would you ever consider attempting a clafoutis? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clafoutis
Natalie, congratulations on your beautiful boy and welcome back! Our first baby just arrived 36 hours ago, and I aimed to do a natural birth, but about 5 hours into hard labor, they had to confine me to bed and I just couldn’t continue to work through the contractions without an epidural. I’m so impressed that you were able to tough it out- a 10 pound baby and a natural birth- wow, you are amazing! He’s absolutely adorable- look at that smile!
Congrats to you! He is precious! I enjoy your blog so much – thanks for your dedication to so many of us!
Beautiful baby! Welcome to the world, and congrats, mom and dad.
The cherry crisp looks wonderful; I’m a sucker for anything cherry. I did a similar one a couple of weeks back with strawberries and rhubarb.
And I understand, too, about the “bouncing back”! I had a 10 pound boy at age 39, and a 9 pounder at 45.
I just heard the account of Asa from the book of Chronicles last week. I’m definitely considering it for when I have a little one. Great to see that it’s being used, it’s not very common at all, which is why I like it.
I’m so glad to see a new recipe! Definitely don’t rush the creativity.
Blessings to you and your new baby boy!

Congratulations and welcome back. Now lets see if I can succeed in making these cherries without covering them with drool while I make them
What a handsome baby!! No wonder your tired giving birth to such a large baby. I have three grown sons and they are wonderful. I used to tease them when we moved, that I had sons so they could move the furniture for us!
This Cherry Crisps looks really good. My oldest son is a cherry lover, so I’ll have to make it for him when he visits next time!
congrats on your new darling! the crisp looks yummy.

I am so, so excited to have found your blog. I am in the process of determining whether or not I am allergic.sensitive to gluten. I just began a blog and wrote an entry on how I have come to this idea. I am sure that I will use your blog/recipes often. Do you have a particular place that you shop often for gluten free foods?
Thanks!!
Welcome back Natalie! Glad to hear that all is well. I was a little worried.
Glad to see you’re back—and that you and Asa are safe!
LOVE this! Thanks so much for sharing! My husband is a cherry pie conoisseur and will not eat any cherry pie filling from a can! I’m going to have to save this and try it!
I visit your blog every now and then. My niece has gluten allergies, so this is the best spot on the Net for me to find recipes! Thanks!
Just thought I’d mention the give away I’m having on my blog.

I am so glad to see you back! We added our third in February and life is do busy, but over time you do get back to being yourself. I am glad you were able to birth naturally (I did all three naturally but the third was the most beautiful and virtually painless). Beautiful way to come back…cherries! I am working on a cherry ice cream recipe. Welcome back!
Cherries are on sale this week at Harris Teeter, trying out your Cherry crisp after dinner tonight with a vanilla bean ice cream.
Thanks for the recipe.
